Pursuing a career path to medicine

My Lifelong Career Goals

I sit on the floor for hours, building Legos, a world of precision and creativity, even as my back aches from bad posture. But I continue. It’s not just about stacking pieces for me; it’s about incorporating mechanisms, like a carousel that turns. I was hooked. Lego gave me the rush the I craved, and it never got old, no matter how many sets I built. That love for building evolved into a fascination with learning how the human body works, especially the heart, a powerful, muscular organ that never stops beating. I realized that surgery is like building Legos: both require patience, precision, and a clear vision. Every bone, muscle, and tissue fits together like pieces in a set. I want to become a  surgeon because the same rush I feel building complex Lego sets, the focus, the precision, the thrill of fitting every piece perfectly, mirrors the mentality and excitement I feel when I imagine myself in the operating room, piecing together one heart at a time.

My Educational Path

Knowing I wanted to pursue a career in a rigorous and rewarding field, I focused on STEM-related classes and activities. I volunteer at a hospital, where I’ve been able to become a part of patients’ experiences and deepen my passion for medicine. I’m a leader in Future Medical Professionals, Mock Trial, and Model United Nations, and an active member in Robotics and Speech and Debate—all of which have helped me become a better communicator and critical thinker. I was chosen to attend an international MUN conference in Venice, Italy, where my committee focused on human rights, an issue that intersects with global healthcare access and ethics. These experiences have enabled me to collaborate with people from around the world and prepared me for a future in medicine.

My Community Service

I’m fortunate to have the opportunity to shadow a doctor who runs a free clinic for patients without health insurance, many of whom come from underrepresented and diverse communities. This experience has taught me firsthand the importance of accessible healthcare and the role compassion plays in medicine. At the clinic, I assist with patient intake by taking height, weight, blood pressure, blood sugar, and temperature to establish a standard of care. I  log this information, which the doctor uses to determine the appropriate course of treatment. Being part of this process has shown me how vital the most minor tasks can be in helping someone get the care they need. It’s deepened my interest in medicine and reminded me that healthcare is not just about science—it’s about service, empathy, and advocating for those who need it most.

ABOUT ME

School Extracurricular Activities

Research shows that students who take part in extracurricular activities are more engaged in their education compared to their peers. Whether I’m in class or working on something outside of school, I’ve always been drawn to discovering how things work and why they matter. Being involved in various clubs has helped me develop new interests, build lifelong friendships, grow new skills, and participate in meaningful activities outside of the classroom.
